Reformation (October 31, 2010) [Sorry, the recording of this sermon is not available]1 John 3:1-2 Don't Lose the Wonder of Christ's Love 1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Pentecost 22 (October 24, 2010)1 John 5:13-15 Approaching God with Confidence 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. Pentecost 21 (October 17, 2010)Luke 17:11-19 Remember what Christ has Done 11Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy a met him. They stood at a distance 13and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Pentecost 20 (October 10, 2010)Revelation 14:6 Fly with the Good News! 6Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. Pentecost 19 (October 3, 2010)Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 We Have Enough 8If you see the poor oppressed in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. 9The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields. 10 Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. 11As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? 12The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep. 13I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner, 14or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when he has a son there is nothing left for him. 15Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand. 16This too is a grievous evil: As a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gain, since he toils for the wind? 17All his days he eats in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger. 18Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him—for this is his lot. 19Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. 20He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart. Pentecost 18 (September 26, 2010)John 6:40 Because I Am Alive My Body Will Be Raised 40For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” Pentecost 17 (September 19, 2010)Mark 2:1-12 Jesus Gives Power You Don't Have 1A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7“Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins....” He said to the paralytic, 11“I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” Pentecost 16 (September 12, 2010)1 Corinthians 1:2 Gathered Saints are the Church 2To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ
Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours: Pentecost 15 (September 5, 2010)James 2:1-13 Serve the Lord in Humility 1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong? 8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. 12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! Pentecost 14 (August 29, 2010)2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 We Believe-How Does That Happen 13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you a to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pentecost 13 (August 22, 2010)Pentecost 12 (August 15, 2010)Acts 2:22-36 No Misconceoption: Jesus is Lord 22“Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, b put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him: “‘I saw the Lord always before me. 29“Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, d that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: Pentecost11 (August 8, 2010)Matthew 26:47-56 He Did What He Came For 47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. 50Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” 55At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. Pentecost10 (August 1, 2010)Galations 4:4-5 Jesus Obeyed the Law for Me 4But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Pentecost 9 (July 25, 2010)Romans 1:1-6 Who is Jesus? Your Savior 1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4and who through the Spirit a of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God b by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 6And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Pentecost 8 (July 17, 2010)Matthew 6:25-34 You are in Good Hands 25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Pentecost 7 (July 10, 2010)Hebrrews 11:3 The Origin of all Things: GOD CREATED! By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Pentecost 6 (July 3, 2010)Pentecost 5 (June 27, 2010)Genesis 39:6b-12, 16-23 Follow Jesus and Enjoy a Tough Life Genesis 39:6-12 (NIV)
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” 8But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. 11One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the
household servants was inside. 12She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come
to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the
house. 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. Pentecost 4 (June 20, 2010)Pentecost 3 (June 13, 2010)Pentecost 2 (June 6, 2010)Luke 7:1-10 Lord, Give us Such Faith as this! 1When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. Trinity (May 30, 2010)John 16:12-15 Praise the Triune God of our Salvation 12“I have much more to say to you, more than you can
now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into
all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and
he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will bring glory to me by taking
from what is mine and making it known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father
is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make
it known to you. Pentecost 1 (May 23, 2010)Acts 14:8-18 8In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. 9He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. 11When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” 12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. 13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them. 14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul
heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:
15“Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human
like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless
things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in
them. 16In the past, he let all nations go their own way. 17Yet
he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you
rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of
food and fills your hearts with joy.” 18Even with these words,
they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them. Easter 7 (May 16, 2010)Easter 6 (May 9, 2010)2 Kings 6:15-17 15When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” the servant asked. 16“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17And Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. Easter 5 (May 2, 2010)1 Corinthians 13
1If I speak in the tongues a of men and of angels, but have not love, I am
only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy
and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can
move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to
the poor and surrender my body to the flames, b but have not love, I gain nothing.
Easter 3 (April 18, 2010)Acts 9:1-19 1Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” 7The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” 17Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Easter 2 (April 11, 2010)Easter (April 4, 2010)Revelation 2:8-11 Today Death has become life for you! 8"To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: Good FridayRevelation 5:6-14 Bought by the Blood of the Lamb 6Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing
in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the
elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God
sent out into all the earth. 7He came and took the scroll from the right hand
of him who sat on the throne. 8And when he had taken it, the four living creatures
and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and
they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the
saints. 9And they sang a new song: Lent Meditation 5Revelation 3:1-6 It’s not medals on your uniform I’m looking for, but faithfulness in battle. 1"To the angel of the church in Sardis write: Lent 5Isaiah 43:16-24 We have burdened the Lord with our sin 16This is what the LORD says — he who made a way through
the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 17who drew out the chariots and
horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise
again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: 18"Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past. 19See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up;
do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.
20The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water
in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Lent Meditation 4Revelation 2:12-17 Be alert! Keep holding on! Reinforcements are near at hand! 12"To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: Lent 4Philippians 3:17--4:1 What Kind of Pastors (and People) Do We Want? 17Join with others in following my example, brothers, and
take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. 18For, as
I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as
enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is
their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.
20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there,
the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything
under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like
his glorious body. Lent Meditation 3Revelation 2:18-29 Keep on growing and don’t tolerate the enemy! 18"To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: Lent 3Luke 15:1–3, 11b–32 Welcome home 1Now the tax collectors and "sinners"
were all gathering around to hear him. 2But the Pharisees
and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats
with them." 19Then Jesus told them this parable Lent Meditation 2Revelation 2:1-7 Love Like you did at First! 1"To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: Lent 2Luke 13:1-9 Repentance is a way of life 1Now there were some present at that time who
told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse
sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I
tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or
those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them-do you think they
were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell
you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
